Wax + Color: Introduction To Encaustic Painting

Students will explore the luminous beauty and versatility of encaustic art - painting with molten, pigmented beeswax. Learning the basics of this ancient technique that has evolved into one of the most versatile mediums available for artists today, offering many exciting and creative possibilities! Artists with backgrounds in almost any medium will find this workshop an exciting opportunity to expand their artistic possibilities. We will learn about the basic materials and formulas used in encaustic, and discuss safety procedures, supports, and grounds, along with a variety of tools and techniques for fusing. Demonstrations will focus on encaustic painting basics for fusing, glazing, transparencies, building up of texture, layering and scraping/scribing, as well as image transfer and how to embed collage elements will be covered. We'll also learn how to easily and inexpensively incorporate encaustic into a regular studio practice.

  • All materials are included but these are some things that students can bring to personalize their works:
  • Student Supplied Materials (optional):
  • •Some things to add to your works: like “TONER” based photocopies, cut up comics or copies of type, pressed flowers, tea, fibers, found objects.
  • •Disposable latex gloves (For use with oil sticks)
  • •Nice to bring if you have them:
  • R&F oil sticks (These are worth the investment! I will demonstrate with these oil sticks, but students will have other brands available to use. If you are buying new, purchase transparent colors. Shiva is another brand of oil sticks.)
  • Alcohol Inks (I will have a limited supply of alcohol inks for class use and demonstration.)
  • Pan Pastels, Caran d'Ache Neocolor Crayons, and the like if they have them. No acrylics please.
  • *Items can be shared if you have a friend taking the workshop.
