A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls is an 8-week program designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults.
A Matter of Balance emphasizes practical strategies to reduce fear of falling and increase activity levels. Participants learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and exercise to increase strength and balance.
People who completed the class reported they had increased levels of activity, greater mobility control, improved social function and increased mobility range.

Heartsaver CPR with AED and Basic First Aid is intended for those who have a duty to respond as a first responder to an emergency because of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements.
The class is in two parts: CPR/AED in the morning, and Basic First Aid in the afternoon.
♥ The American Heart Association requires each participant to bring a current Heartsaver manual with them to class. The cost of the class includes a manual, which will be mailed to you - when you register please provide an accurate mailing address. It is very important that you read the manual prior to attending the class.
♥ If you register less than 5 working days before the class there will not be time to mail the manual to you - you will have to come to the CHEC in Building D on the Salem Hospital campus, and pick one up.
After successful completion of the course you will receive an American Heart Association (AHA) Heartsaver First Aid and CPR/AED card which includes Adult, Child and Infant. The card is good for 2 years.

How can you ensure your end-of-life wishes are respected? The answer lies in a document called an advance directive which allows you to express your decisions about care before a medical crisis occurs.
This Key Conversations™ workshop offers instruction in preparing an advance directive. Attendees are given a planning guide to keep which includes conversation starters, discussion questions and worksheets, a wallet card and an advance directive legal form. Topics discussed include views on prolonging life, CPR, receiving food and water through a tube, breathing machines, living with dementia, managing pain and comfort, organ and tissue donation, thoughts on hospice care, and designated decision makers. Family members may attend together if desired. Learn how to express your choices.
After completing this two hour class, you should be able to:
• Develop an action plan for having conversations with family and loved ones and your doctor about your preferences for end-of-life care.
• Use the KEY Conversations Planning Guide to assist you in completing your advance directive in the near future.

This class is an opportunity to practice comfort measures for labor, have some time with a childbirth educator to ask questions, and be with other expectant parents.
Who should attend:
• If you have already taken a childbirth class with a previous baby and want to refresh your memory.
• If you attended the weekend childbirth class and would like more practice.
• If you took the online childbirth class and would like to meet with an educator and practice breathing, relaxation techniques, and have a labor rehearsal with comfort measures.

RISE - Recovery in Strength and Exercise*
RISE is a unique cancer exercise program designed specifically for people suffering from fatigue and loss of strength that can result from surgery, chemotherapy or radiation.
This four week class covers several different modes of exercise to promote total body wellness. The focus is on functional strength conditioning using free weights that is appropriate to the individual while offering the support of a small group setting. This class also includes targeted exercise for improvement in balance and flexibility along with restorative relaxation techniques. Individuals attend class three days per week for a total of 12 classes.

Sleep Apnea Support Group
There is help with getting a better nights sleep. This support group is for sleep apnea patients, and we encourage family members to attend also. The group will be led by the medical experts at Salem Hospital's Sleep Center. Come learn from each other and from guest speakers.
Meeting Dates and Times: 2nd Thursdays alternating months,
7 - 8:30 p.m. First two meetings will be on Thursdays, June 13 and August 8.

STAND – Strength Training and Neural Development
Ready to take a STAND? Make a difference with five weeks of strength training and neural development
STAND classes offer a new choice for recovering strength lost due to illness, injury, or inactivity. This group exercise program brings together flexibility, core and resistance forms of exercise within the comfort of a health education setting. STAND can be adapted to meet your needs while offering the encouragement and motivation that comes from working as part of a group. Take a STAND and build the strength and confidence you need to live a healthier and happier life.
Who should attend:
• Former RISE cancer patients
• Individuals who have completed cardiac or other forms of rehab
• Bariatric patients who do not feel comfortable in a gym setting
Sushi Made Simple
Love sushi and want to learn how to make it at home? Come join us! No raw fish in this class but you’ll learn how to roll your own sushi with a variety of traditional and non-traditional ingredients including vegetables and spicy tuna and brown rice.
Tai Chi I: Moving for Better Balance
This 16-session class is perfect for those who’ve never tried Tai Chi or for those who are looking for a class that moves at a slower pace. You’ll learn the research-tested 8 Form program of Tai Chi specifically designed to improve balance and prevent falls in older adults.
Meets twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Tai Chi II: Skill Growth
This 16-session class is especially for those who have taken the Moving for Better Balance class and want to continue learning and refining their Tai Chi forms. We’ll foster the balance skills, good posture, energy flow and calm spirit introduced in the beginning class.

Good posture, body mechanics and exercise are essential to maintaining a healthy back.
In this class you’ll learn how to keep your back strong and decrease the risk of injury. Learn easy-to-follow strength and flexibility exercises to keep your spine strong, so you can keep doing the activities you enjoy.
This class is offered by the Salem Spine Center and is taught by a Physical Therapist.
