Ballet at 171 is taught as a graduated level course in classical dance technique. Emphasis is on alignment and centering. Each class begins with exercises at the barre where basic positions and vocabulary are practiced and mastered. The class proceeds to center floor work where the dancer executes more difficult patterns in dance training. Pointe is a positioning which the body is balanced on the extreme tip of the toe. Classes in pointe are offered only to advanced students with permission from the instructor.
Attire: Leotard, fitted t-shirt, tights, dance skirt, leggings, ballet slippers.

Carrie Teaches: Ballet and Tap
Carrie Hogue officially joined the dance faculty in the fall of 2011 after years of dancing at 171 and substitute teaching for the center’s long-term instructors. Carrie, along with her husband and children, has played an active role in 171’s dance classes, recitals, and in Patty Ozer’s annual story ballets. Carrie has enjoyed teaching Creative Movement, Ballet, and Tap.
