As a retired surgeon and US Navy flight surgeon, I have accumulated considerable knowledge and experience in surgical practice, the history of medicine, and military history. I am completing a book on the history of military medicine. The synthesis of topics in this narrative includes discussing medicine and surgery, and its history as it relates to military history—a story of compassion shown by the few in the presence of neither by the many. Let me share that story with you as we travel from ancient Egypt and Rome to the Gulf Wars and plains of Ukraine.
