Greed, Graft, and the Gilded Age Capitalists (RIT: Zoom)
Fall (2-3 hours) | Available (Membership Required)
We will look at the men behind the building of the Transcontinental Railroad, their ruthless ambition, staggering greed, and ruthless ambition. Their battle to control the railroads sparked stock market frenzies, panics, and crashes, and influenced presidential elections. These Gilded Age Robber Barons manipulated our economy in the decades before government oversight or control.
Note: This is an OLLI at RIT course.
Debbie Huff
Living in California in the late 1950s, Debbie Huff first learned of the “Big Four”—the men who built the Transcontinental Railroad. This sparked her interest in the powers behind our history and their deeper stories never taught in schools. She has shared these stories with fellow Osher at RIT members for over a decade.?
