Together, we’ll watch eight acclaimed films featuring food. They will be presented in chronological order of production.
- Japanese: Tampopo (1985), directed by Juzo Itami - 115 minutes
- French/Danish: Babette’s Feast (1987), directed by Gabriel Axel - 102 minutes
- Mexican: Like Water for Chocolate (1992), directed by Alfonso Arau - 105 minutes
- Chinese: Eat Drink Man Woman (1994), directed by Ang Lee - 123 minutes
- French: Chocolat (2000), directed by Lasse Hallström - 121 minutes
- American: Julie & Julia (2009), directed by Nora Ephron - 123 minutes
- Indian: The Lunchbox (2013), directed by Ritesh Batra - 105 minutes
- Indian/French: The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014), directed by Lasse Hallström - 122 minutes
After each film, we’ll talk about the ingredients we see, compare how food is prepared, and discuss how it effects the characters in each. We might even carry on the conversation at nearby restaurants with a chance to correct an omitted cuisine: Italian!
The Study Leader will guide class discussions after each film.
Stephen Flanders
BS, MArch, M.I.T. School of Architecture; ME, Dartmouth Thayer School of Engineering. Flanders is a retired research supervisory engineer from the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory. Among his interests are editing and creating articles in Wikipedia—a topic he has presented in Osher classes, three times.
