Accidents in Outdoor Pursuits – Their Causes and Cures (In-Person)
Winter (9 - 13.5 hours) | Registration opens 12/3/2024 12:00 AM EST
My avocation of a life outdoors has taught me many lessons. As Editor of Accidents in North American Mountaineering for 40 years and having been asked to investigate over 60 accidents involving a variety of venues in all seasons – climbing, hiking, ropes courses, river crossings, etc.
I have developed a system for analyzing mishaps that have happened in adventure activities. We will examine some classic case studies, ranging from guided climbs to Boy Scouts of America, from individual climbers to organized programs, and more.
Accidents happen in outdoor pursuits and will continue to do so because risk is always involved. Learning how to prevent life-threatening or disabling injuries is a skill we all seek to hone.
Here are the results I hope to achieve in this course:
- Participants will learn about the key elements that have resulted in accidents in outdoor pursuits.
- We’ll analyze some selected accidents using the chart I’ve developed over the years.
- Participants might share some of their own mishaps – or ones they might know about or have questions about.
- Participants will raise questions that challenge us and each other.
- Participants will enjoy our time together.
This course will combine lecture with class discussions.
