Newspaper Digitization: Old News in the Digital Age
Room 109, Rauner Special Collections Library in Webster Hall
In this roughly one-hour session, we’ll explore Rauner’s collection of historic newsprints dating to the mid-1700s, and discuss what it takes to make these materials digitally accessible under the auspices of the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP). As the project manager for NDNP’s New Hampshire partner at Dartmouth, I’ll offer a brief overview of the program, then we’ll dive right into a selection of New Hampshire newspapers in three formats - print, microfilm, and digital. As a group, we’ll compare each format to determine their benefits and drawbacks in research and genealogical applications, and see what fascinating details we can glean from the headlines of the past.
