Art Direction in Film (In-person)
Spring (14 hrs or more) | Registration opens 3/6/2025 12:00 AM EST
When watching a film, we tend to believe that what is seen on screen is real, photographed in real locations, buildings, and houses. This course will uncover some of the magic of art direction for film, discussing how set design creates the environment the director wants the audience to see, enhancing the storytelling of the film and its characters.
Six movies: Auntie Mame, Hello Dolly, Breakdown, Anna Karenina, The Shape of Water, and Black Panther will be screened, with visual presentations after each movie. From sound stage sets and studio back lots to real locations and computer generated imagery, the artistry of each film will be revealed.
This course will combine lecture with class discussions.
