The Eye of Leonardo: Anatomical Drawing from the Royal Library at Windsor
Speaker: David Neville Sandberg

The anatomical drawings by Leonardo held in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle are priceless works of art. We will follow their journey from Leonardo himself in the great hospitals of Milan in the Renaissance, to the Court of France at Amboise, to Whitehall Palace in London during the reign of William and Mary. The anatomical drawings were bound in books and held by the Royal family for 300 years at the Bureau in Kensington Palace and then at Windsor Castle. At the direction of the Prince Consort, during the reign of Queen Victoria, a project began to preserve these 500 year old drawings. In 1978, by gracious permission of HM Queen Elizabeth II, it became possible for the very first time to produce a complete perfect reproduction of the entire collection of anatomical drawings for publication. 998 sets were produced and sold to universities, medical schools, and art galleries around the world. Dartmouth College purchased one of these 998 sets. It is held in the Rauner Library in 3 volumes. The Da Vinci drawings have traveled across countries through various owners to the present day as one of the finest surviving drawing collections from the Renaissance. Join us on a great journey through several countries and across five centuries.
