Accidental Historian: Unraveling My Mother’s Holocaust Story

When Heidi Fishman set out to write her mother’s story of surviving the Holocaust she had no idea how challenging it would be. She thought she could depend on her mother’s memories, but Tutti Lichtenstern was only a child during the ordeal. Heidi soon found herself digging in archives at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, in the Netherlands, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Israel to piece together what truly happened to her family. Through interviews with survivors, historians, and family friends she uncovered lost information, made new friends, and met international diplomats. Heidi invites you to come along with her as she recounts this journey.

K. Heidi Fishman, MA, Ed D, author of the multi-award-winning
Tutti’s Promise, is a board member of the Vermont Holocaust Memorial and a current member of the International Committee of the Lados Group. Heidi grew up in West Hartford, Connecticut. After graduating from Williams College, she received both an MA and an EdD in Counseling Psychology from Western Michigan University. She worked at Dartmouth College where she was a staff psychologist at Dick’s House for 25 years. Heidi specialized in helping people with eating disorders and co-chaired the eating disorders program for several years before going into private practice.

Heidi, now retired, and her husband, Dave Smith, live in Norwich.
