Modern Fairy Tales and Myths (In-Person)

Winter (9 - 13.5 hours) | Registration opens 11/24/2025 12:00 AM EST

When most of us were younger, we read to our children and perhaps grandchildren books before they went to sleep. Many ended along the lines of “Everyone Lived Happily Ever After.” The six movies presented herein are basically fairy tales. Some are based on facts, while others are woven out of whole cloth. Each one has a fun aspect, and they range in time from 1934 to 2018.

One film is directed by Clint Eastwood, based on the book by John Berendt. Dashiell Hammett wrote the book and film adaptation for The Thin Man, while The Princess Bride is a true fairy tale. To get my kids, when Blockbuster was real, to watch The Godfather, I told them it was an Italian Fairy Tale, which it naturally is, and so many lines of dialogue have passed into popular culture.

I envisage this as a fun class with great performances and interesting films. I believe that all the films are fairy tales, but will you after watching them? That is fodder for discussion. I list the films, but will decide on an exact order as a surprise and announce it when I send out my welcome letter. The Godfather; The Thin Man; Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil; The Princess Bride; Chicago; The Death of Stalin.
