What We Need To Know About Immigration Today (Zoom)

Spring (4-8 hours) | Available (Membership Required)

This course will assess changes in immigration policy in the current administration and look towards the future. Our overall goal is to empower participants to think and act on immigration in a time of radical change.

The Trump administration is sharply reversing an inclusive climate that began with a path-breaking 1965 immigration act. It is shutting out new migrants and expanding a campaign to expel unauthorized and legal immigrants. It is harkening back to the racist 1924 immigration act. It has pushed past legal constraints.

The first class in this four-part course well review the key policy changes introduced during this administration. It will examine the effect on labor markets, educational institutions, elite occupations, and the rule of law. The second class will include one or more Upper Valley and national scale advocates for immigration who will discuss their direct experience with the policy changes. A third class will be an historical review of American immigration from the 18th century, such as birthright citizenship. Personal narratives will be welcomed. A fourth and final class will address the potential design of a comprehensive immigration bill.

This course will consist of discussions between the Study Leader and participants.

This is a four-session course (8 hours total).
