The medium of documentary films presents situations and events involving real people for the purpose of educating, informing, persuading, and communicating. To help us explore this idea, we will watch the following films:
Five Came Back - World War II through the eyes of famous Hollywood directors Frank Capra, John Ford, William Wyler, and George Stevens. NOTE: The April 13 session will begin at 11:00 AM to accommodate the longer running time of the film and allow a mid-point break.
51 Birch Street - The secret life of the filmmaker’s mother posthumously discovered in her diaries.
Kedi - The relationship between the people and feral cats of Istanbul.
The Fog of War - A revealing interview of Robert McNamara, Secretary of Defense during the Vietnam War.
Joan Rivers, A Piece of Work - A close-up encounter with the famous comedienne showing her wit, grit, and the hard work of show business.
There will be discussion between the Study Leader and participants following the showing of each film.
This is a five-session course (14 hours total).
