Perfect Body: Human Anatomy in the High Renaissance
The birth of the Renaissance in Italy meant the restoration of the human figure in art. Leonardo, Raphael, and Michelangelo were all fascinated by the human form. We will look at eight pieces of Renaissance art that depict how the human body was shown in an ideal way. Leonardo was as much an anatomist as an artist, and he sought to understand our common humanity through the body and its intrinsic structure. Michelangelo's David was a symbol of Florence. Raphael's Alba Madonna is a balanced harmony. This talk will look at the human form through the lens of Classical ideals of perfection. The art created 500 years ago still resonates today in popular culture.
