While many agree that threats to our environment, especially from an exploding population, climate warming and limited resources, are a major concern, little in-depth coverage occurs in the public media. This course will begin with a brief review of the American environmental movement and then study some of the current ecological science regarding forests, climate, water, biodiversity and land use especially as it relates to our region. Simultaneous with the study of contemporary science, we will read poetry from poets like Wendell Berry, Mary Oliver, Gary Snyder and Louise Gluck. Ten to twenty pages from science journals and poems will be distributed at each session. Classes will involve group discussion.
