In this course we will explore Biblical stories that describe the circumstances of a child’s birth, privileged or not, in all cases falling and rising to fame and influence.

Isaac, the child of laughter, the child of promise for a nation, only to be threatened by sacrifice in a cultural/religious ritual. Joseph, the apple of his father’s eye, abused by jealous brothers, seduced by the wife of his boss, in the end reaching fame and fortune. Moses, in grave danger, saved by a princess, leading a people out of depravity. Samuel, the child of the temple, a young recluse, reaching the public arena to elect political consequences. David, the runt of the litter ascending to royalty. Jesus, born in obscurity rising to become a religious leader.

The Jesus narratives are especially interesting since these accounts vary and even contradict one another; could be an a-ha experience.

  • The Bible is the required text for this course.
Hoskin, Heidi

Heidi has taught numerous Osher courses on Biblical texts. This time around she is adding vintage and contemporary stories to complement these texts. She hopes to bring about appreciation of the Bible, highlighting its cultural context and drawing some conclusions for current times. Heidi is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and is keen on promoting Biblical literacy.
