What better time to talk about books than the carefree days of summer? During four sessions, meeting on alternating weeks, we will discuss four novellas, short works of fiction that, although brief, are beautifully written, with stories that are artfully told. Our novellas will include: Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf, Elizabeth Strout’s My Name is Lucy Barton, A River Runs Through It by Norman Maclean, and Stewart O’Nan’s Last Night at the Lobster. From an older couple finding love in their twilight years, to the last ordinary and bizarre day of business at a Red Lobster in Connecticut, our readings will acquaint us with a variety of people, in very different circumstances, all attempting to discover where they belong.

With some gentle guidance from the study leader, classes will be open discussions, a free exchange of ideas, as we explore these extraordinary literary gems.

There are required texts for this course.
