What constitutes mental health and what defines mental illness? How can we better understand the cultural, historical, and contemporary implications of diagnosis and mis-diagnosis? What constitutes “normal behavior?” With the help of interesting case studies, drawn from the biographies of well known historical figures, we will take a close look at clinical depression, obsessions and compulsions, narcissistic personality and other disorders. In doing so, we will gain a better understanding of mental health and an enhanced appreciation for individual differences.

This eight week course will involve outside reading and research, individual presentations and lively discussions.

  • There will be a reading packet as well as a required textbook for this course.
