David Copperfield and Great Expectations are two of Charles Dickens’s greatest novels. They are deceptively similar, each tracing the development of a boy into a man as he seeks to define himself and find a career and love. With a closer look, one finds that the concerns and approaches of the two books are fundamentally different. We will explore all these issues.

This course will consist of a close reading of both novels. (A warning: in my copies, the two total about 1,300 pages.) The course leader will try to guide and stimulate discussion, but class time will be spent in shared discussion. Your participation is essential.
