We’ll explore a new and interesting approach to memoir-writing, providing freedom not possible in more formal approaches to that genre: writing by indirection or parable rather than by first-person reportage. Each week students will write a brief (one or two page) excerpt of a fictional autobiography or memoir, about a character they create, an “avatar”. The purpose is to open the mind to fantasy, humor, and unlikely thoughts. These may or may not correspond to the personal history of the author but may serve to allow the author to explore what has gone by more freely than might be the case otherwise. The compositions may be shared in class.

  • There will be suggested texts for this course. Participants should also be prepared to view some material digitally.
