September 26 through November 14, 2017
Hanover Senior Center - Hanover, NH
Course Fee: $80
We are surrounded by numbers, which tell us much about the state of the world. Using current numbers (statistics) in class, selected topics will lead us into discussions and debates on said topics. Selected topics may include government (and other) statistics on the economy, population, health, education, infrastructure, immigration, war, communication, sports, & others. The major goal of this class is to spark discussion on a variety of pertinent issues, using real numbers (not fake facts), and to come up with solutions to any problems that are addressed.
Prior to the first class, I will send class members a list of possible topics from which to choose. Based on feedback and ratings from students, I’ll select one topic per class to discuss and debate. In each class, I’ll present the numbers (statistics) for that week’s topic, and then the class will discuss. Students will be asked to do their own research for each topic and to provide their own numbers and sources. Discussions will be individual and in small groups, perhaps occasionally with teams representing different points of view.
- There are no required textbooks for this course.
