This course traces the history and policies of the Fed from its secret birth in 1913 to today’s “hints” on interest rate increases. We’ll explore the Fed’s “dual mandate,” its independence from political control, how it has used (and abused?) monetary policy, and how it has (or has not) contributed to inflation...and, importantly, those who have chaired this unusually powerful institution. The Fed is controversial as is its use of monetary policy, its future, and its 2% inflation target.

  • There will be an optional textbook for this course.
