In a departure from learning about folk music, we will be learning about one of the great heroes of modern popular music - Louis Armstrong. His work in the twenties and thirties was fundamental to the formation of jazz as it became a world-wide American art form. Unfortunately, this all happened before most of us were born, and we only then saw him in his later years smiling and being happy - and in movies. But we will uncover his talent, his formational contribution and enjoy the role he played in jazz and not just Dixieland either.

The course will feature discussion, some light reading and appearances by folks who can shed some light on this most important musical figure. Bring your memories and a taste for some great American music.
