Many of us fondly remember the wonderful outpouring of British movies from the post-war years. It was an era full of pictures in all types of genre - drama, comedy, romance, horror – the list goes on.
This class, with only eight films to be screened, will display the talent of writers, directors, and actors who made up this golden age of British films. Creative artists such as David Lean, Trevor Howard, Alec Guinness, Robert Donat, Wendy Hiller, Peter Sellers, Laurence Olivier, and Maggie Smith - the list goes on and on, all stars who lit up the screen during this period.
The difficulty is selecting eight films from such an impressive group of great movies. Unlike some of my other classes, which tended to screen mostly challenging movies, this class will offer a variety of all types of film genre. Some of the pictures to be viewed are: The Thirty Nine Steps (one of Alfred Hitchcock’s most gripping films) Kind Hearts and Coronets, (Alec Guinness), The Entertainer (Laurence Olivier), This Sporting Life, and Room At The Top (Lawrence Harvey and Simone Signoret star in this film of economic class and bittersweet love). There are others just as exciting, and they are all classic films which will delight those who are viewing for the first time and those who are rediscovering these wonderful pictures. The final selection of pictures is still to come, but I can guarantee that any and all of these movies make great viewing.
