What if a beloved character from a short story, poem, children’s book or adult novel leaped off the page and started to sing? What would that song sound like? Feel like? Groove to or swing to? Can you imagine Hester Prynne from The Scarlet Letter singing the blues, or would it be more like Aretha Franklin belting out the stealth Respect anthem? How about Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein or Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn? What about the Friend in Hafiz’s poems? Can a cat sing? Clarence the Copy Cat from Patricia Lakin’s children’s book now stands a chance.

You pick the poem, the novel, the short story. We evoke the lyrics and music, together. Let’s free some literary characters who wish to sing! Bring your favorite piece of literature; an unwavering commitment to be silly, serious, and creative - all at the same time - to co-write songs that our characters would love to sing (and we will sing together in a culminating literary cabaret). No prior instrumental or songwriting experience is necessary, just an openness to experiment, and delve into the worlds of literature and music.

  • There are required textbooks for this course. We’ll have time to eat and socialize during the break - please feel free to bring a brown-bag meal to enjoy.

Lois Fein discovered the magic of songwriting at a pivotal point in her life composing original contemporary folk music with David Wilcox and John Stewart of the famed Kingston Trio. She recorded her first album of 15 original songs in 2006 called Step Into the Water (www.LoisFein.com). Lois loves to help people write their own songs – to delight children or grandchildren, woo your beloved, or to simply express your unique voice to create the soundtrack of your life.
