Dramatic Courtroom Trials - Hollywood Style

“The only real lawyers are trial lawyers, and trial lawyers try cases to juries.” - Clarence Darrow

We will watch and then discuss five of the most famous courtroom trials ever produced by Hollywood (as ranked by the American Bar Association, no less), and then watch two episodes from the 2002 HBO series The Wire. Co Study Leader Hank Buermeyer will introduce the films, explain how they were selected, and their corresponding filmographies. Co-study leader Tom Urgo, a multi-talented lawyer (for this course primarily civil and criminal law) will explain how Hollywood covers jury selection, overall legal strategy, opening and closing statements/arguments, expert witnesses, etc., and how these terms of law conform to reality. No reading materials required.

The Movies
My Cousin Vinny
To Kill a Mockingbird
Inherit the Wind
A Civil Action
A Few Good Men

The Wire
Season 1, Episode 12: Cleaning Up
Season 1, Episode 13: Sentencing

Hank has been a Study Leader for almost twenty-five years, always with a new course. He likes to research a new topic, then turn the results into an Osher course. He remembers conducting Dvorak’s New World Symphony while listening to a 45 rpm record in his bedroom (with the door closed) around age 10. From singing in a church youth choir to attending musical concerts, music has always played a pivotal role in his life. He holds two Masters’ degrees from the University of New Haven.

Tom Urgo has presented numerous classes for both ILEAD and Osher. He lawyered for 40+ years, held a world record verdict, and saved a park, but more importantly, tried to help as many people as possible with their legal issues. He also played (three-time MVP) and coached sports, and has been a photographer for most of his life. Along with law, Tom graduated college with a degree in Fine Arts and has had his photographs appear in national and local publications together with winning several best-in-show awards in juried photo competitions.
