A guided tour of the Dartmouth College Campus tree collection. Brian Beaty, the Campus Arborist, will lead participants on a leisurely walk through the Campus core and discuss the important or historical specimens that have been planted there. Participants will learn about the history of the College Arboretum, the architectural contribution of the great trees, and the development of the Landscape Master Plan. We will also discuss methods of tree identification, tree care and maintenance practices, and the environmental and societal benefits of mature trees. The goal of this course is to help participants identify local and exotic species but also to provide a little insight to the culture of trees and why they are worthy of protection in the Campus environment. Mr. Beaty will speak about the noteworthy features of trees we will see and will allow ample time for questions as we progress.
