In this one-time, two-hour presentation we will explore the story, music, historical context, and the composers of two operas: Jacques Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffman and Geoachino Rossini’s The Barber of Seville. Both will be presented by Opera North this summer at the Lebanon Opera House from August 3rd through August 14th. The Tales of Hoffman (French: Les contes d’Hoffmann) is an opéra fantastique. The French libretto was written by Jules Barbier, based on three short stories by E. T. A. Hoffmann, who is the protagonist of the story. It was Offenbach’s final work, as he died a year before the premiere. Geoachino Rossini’s opera The Barber of Seville has proven to be one of the greatest masterpieces of comedy within music, and has been described as the opera buffa of all “opere buffe.” Even after two hundred years, it remains a popular work.
