This course will study the long-term influence of the Puritan migration in America. How did a small English group seeking religious freedom in 1630 manage to influence America’s structure of self-government, the American Revolution, the industrial revolution, and social and cultural reform movements like women’s rights and abolitionism – to say nothing of education at all levels? In exploring these broad events, we will also look into families that helped lead these ideals. In the 17th Century this would include the Winthrops, the Mathers, and a few other players. In the 18th Century, the Adams and Hancock clans will be featured. In the 19th Century, we will look at the Beecher, Perkins, and Lowell families. The class will consist of short lectures and significant discussion time, with occasional visuals and sound clips to vary the presentations.

  • There will be short reading assignments in the required book along with free additional materials provided to participants.
  • American Nations (ISBN: 978-0143122029) by Colin Woodard.
