Back in the day, family farms dominated northern New England. Today, the farm field is one of the most endangered features of our landscape, as small operators are crowded out by the relentless pressures of industrial-scale agriculture, national and international competition, and changing population patterns, to name only a few causes. Using the Upper Valley as our focus, we’ll consider the causes and consequences of the decline of family farms. Do “niche” and organic farms offer hope for the future, or has a defining cultural and economic icon disappeared from New England for good?
