We will plunge into the world of metaphor and read The Power of Myth by Joseph Campbell. No prior familiarity with Campbell’s work is needed to sign up for this course. Our focus will be the perennial philosophy of religious myths and Campbell’s Hero’s Journey. This is a deep subject, and we will do our best to tap into the richness of it with lecture, writing, and focused discussion. Jungian psychology and eastern philosophies will be woven into the course. Each participant will be encouraged to keep a personal journal using mythological language and imagery, or to keep a dream journal. Writing is another way of experiencing the power of myth, as this is a subject for not only understanding, but also to be lived. Readings of 30-40 pages will be assigned each week.
