Attracting avid fans, called Janeites, and even appearing on the British ten-pound note, Jane Austen is one of England’s most beloved and greatest authors. Many people around the world have read her best-known novel, Pride and Prejudice, and have seen film or television adaptations of her books. This course offers learners the opportunity to explore three of her less well-known, yet still enjoyable and worthwhile, novels: Lady Susan, Northanger Abbey, and Mansfield Park. During the course, you will analyze Austen’s brilliant style, discuss the moral issues raised in the novels, and learn about their sources and cultural contexts. By the end of the course, you will have developed the confidence and skills necessary to interpret other novels by Austen and her contemporaries. The teaching approach for the course will be an eclectic blend of discussion, group work, and some lecture, supplemented with video clips from film and televised versions of the novels. The main texts for the course will be annotated editions of the three novels; a few short supplemental readings will also be assigned.

Roberts, Marilyn

Marilyn Roberts is Professor Emeritus of English at Waynesburg University. During her graduate studies at Columbia University and Newcastle University, she specialized in the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. Besides having taught Shakespeare at the college level for over thirty years as well as in several Osher courses, she has published articles about Shakespeare, Jane Austen, and other authors.
