The Great Cover Songs in American Popular Music
Summer 9 to 13.5 hours | This course is completed
"Covers" represent one of the most interesting aspects of the music industry - and one of the most creative and controversial.
A "Cover" is a song that is re-done by another artist - either as a clear copy or as a radically different treatment. "Covering" is as old as the music industry itself and has gone through stages of respect and downright disrespect.
But all this makes for a fascinating study of our popular music. In this course we will "cover" many aspects of what makes a song a song, what are the forces that operate on it and what it takes to make a great record. We will see YouTubes of examples and also listen to local performers do their takes on their favorite "covers."
Come aboard - it'll be a fun ride!

Julia has always been in love with music. She has performed most of her life, as a Whipple Hill Gang member, and is now half of “Daley With Julia.”
