The UK voted to leave the EU in June 2016, and then took four years arguing over the implementation of that choice. On Jan 31, 2020 it finally left, but with a transition period ending Dec 31, 2020. The consequences are only now being realized.

Over four sessions, we’ll explore a variety of themes related to Brexit: How has the EU evolved, and why did opposition in the UK to it grow? What were the referendum battle lines? Why did Theresa May fail, and how did Boris Johnson get it done? What does it mean for Ireland and the Good Friday Agreement? Will the United Kingdom remain united? What have been the gains and losses thus far? What are the parallels between UK and US populism?

We’ll use the sessions to review facts and events, but also to discuss opinions. This has been a monumental change, with impacts on the very constitution of the UK. Adjusting to the new relationship is likely to take both the UK and the EU decades to digest. Rather than reading assignments, there will be suggested YouTube videos and a film for participants to watch on your own time.

A native of Montreal, Bruce’s career in financial services took him to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; Paris, France; Tokyo, Japan; and finally New York City. Having retired to the Upper Valley, he became fascinated with the Brexit referendum and wondered why a country would voluntarily bring financial hardship on itself. He’s been seeking answers ever since.
