For this course, we will take a trip into the world and work of Shakespeare. We will start with an introduction to Shakespeare in order to understand the context of his work. Some time will be spent on exploring the language he uses and how to decipher it.

We will talk about Shakespeare’s famous Globe theatre and the importance it had in Elizabethan times. A brief discussion of historical context will help set the stage for a further exploration of his well-known comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This play tells the story of the Duke of Athens, Theseus, who is planning his marriage to Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons. On the way to their wedding day, there are plenty of twists and turns in typical Shakespearean fashion. Cases of mistaken identify and utter confusion add to the merriment.

The goal of this course is to make Shakespeare’s writing more accessible and enjoyable in addition to having a few laughs along the way.
