Greek Myths, Again
Winter (9 - 13.5 hours) | This course is completed
Do any of these scenarios sound familiar? A mother loses her daughter to a powerful man and despairs of ever seeing her again. A son volunteers for war, insisting that his family’s privilege and position doesn’t buy him a pass. Brothers band together to overthrow a despot, then begin to fight amongst themselves. Let’s take another look at some of these tales and see if there is any wisdom to be had.
This course will be a refreshing dive into classical antiquity. Each week, we’ll take on a few mythological beings, starting with Apollo and then proceeding backwards or forwards per class preferences. Participants may use whatever sources they please, and are encouraged to present their findings. Edith Hamilton’s Mythology is a good place to start, but not required. Works by Robert Graves are also useful. We will also look at relevant art work and do some in class writing as time permits.
