Shakespeare’s Tempest is the bard’s final play.
Now all my charms are o’er thrown,
And what strength I have’s mine own,
Which is most faint.
...As you from crimes would pardoned be,
Let your indulgence set me free.
- Epilogue
Not tragedy, comedy, history, per se, The Tempest is not definable. Or is it?
Our focus in this brief course will then be to categorize (perhaps) the final product of a universally acclaimed genius. The Tempest also hypothetically offers a chance for readers to reflect on twentieth century concerns, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic: love, loneliness, revenge, anger, hatred, climate, etc.
Each student will be asked to memorize a brief speech or lines within a speech of his or her choosing at the final meeting and deliver it.
