A film study. Come with me and let me introduce you to some of my Roman friends. Meet Big Julie, Cleo, Mark A., soldiers and peasants, the middle, the upper and the lower classes, and of course the slaves. Rome in the first century is one of my favorite times in history. We will watch the first season of the 2005 HBO series Rome, featuring 12 approximately one-hour episodes. Since it is dramatized, I will explain the composite characters and the actual events which need to be at times made to fit the script and screen.

Many characters are combined, and I will provide historical data to separate the actual facts from the need to produce a viewable film. Class discussion will follow each session and I am available before class, during the break, and after we pack up. No reading is necessary, but questions and opinions are welcome.

  • This TV series is rated TV-MA.
