Gospel music in America is one of the most unappreciated forms of popular music we have. Its influence has spread widely since our beginnings, and this course will trace that history in both the white and black communities. The study will focus on the music and the culture—as it always does—and will not concentrate on the religious aspects. There will be much to cover and it will be very meaningful both historically and musically. The course will be given live, feature YouTubes of the music, local performers playing their favorite gospel songs, and class discussion and sharing.

  • Required: proof of vaccination (including booster shot) or proof of a negative test for those attending in-person courses. Masks will remain mandatory for anyone participating in any in-person course.

Individuals are fully vaccinated 14 days after their final dose in a COVID-19 vaccine series. Accepted COVID-19 vaccines are those that received full approval or emergency use authorization by the FDA.

You must present proof over Zoom one of three ways before course begins:

    1. Present vaccination cards and a photo ID to an Osher staff member.
    2. Download Bindle app and generate an entry pass for Dartmouth College.
    3. Present negative test results before each class.

Daley, Ford

Ford’s interest in non-classical music started in childhood. He loves to share musical experiences and ideas and its impact on our lives. He sings and plays guitar, harmonica, and Dobro.

Paul is a life-long singer and has vast knowledge of secular and religious music. He performs with the Lyme Church Choir, the choral group “Full Circle,” the Doo-Wop group “The Charades,” and as tenor for the “Pawley Daley Duo.”

Julia has always been in love with music. She has performed most of her life, as a Whipple Hill Gang member, and is now half of “Daley With Julia.”
