Russia is a fascinating and complex country. By land mass, it is the largest in the world. This presentation by Larry Harper “pulls back the curtain” to explain Russia’s staunch connections to its history, religion, and socio-political systems, and the strong effects these have on Russia today. 

Russia contains highly diverse ethnic and religious minorities, a vast array of sub-languages, and various distinct physical environments. It also possesses a history of some of the leading fine arts: visual arts, dance, music, and literature. However, Russia has a bloody disposition, attacking, intimidating, and frightening neighboring states, and continuing near total control over its citizens. These factors raise anxieties and concerns in the West.  

What has driven it to attack its neighbors, friends, and citizens? Starting with Peter the Great and continuing up to the invasions of Georgia and Ukraine, we will explore how Russia has changed and yet remains deeply rooted in its history.
