NOTE: Catalog lists this as a 4-session course ending June 21. A recent update has changed it to a 3-session course ending on June 14.
Social movements have been major engines of societal change as they attempt to address challenges of poverty and injustice. Through interactive lectures, films, and discussions, we will examine the dynamics of power and social change and the role movements have played in different contexts—tapping into the experiences of civil rights, peace, health, environmental, and women’s movements in the States and around the world.
Documentaries, case studies, and muliple images and graphics will bring to life the struggles, strategies and people at the forefront of creating change and inspiring activism. As we deepen our understanding, we will highlight the hope and joy social movements generate as well as examine the inevitable tensions and challenges that movements face and in many cases, the backlash and violence that occur as a result of their successes.
Optional reading materials will be distributed during class.
