Every place has a story. Embarking on a virtual trip through Germany, we’ll explore the country’s defining historic moments.

Our journey commences at a Roman portal on the far Western edge of Germany and ends in the home of the richest man who ever lived. Each city or town opens a window into Germany’s 2,000-year old past and gives a glimpse into people’s lives, their distinctive way of thinking, their art and music, and their buildings.

Every story has a protagonist. Ours opens with Constantine the Great in Trier (4th century) and continues with Charlemagne, whose empire was based in Aachen. Otto the Great made his home in medieval Quedlinburg, and Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa built impressive castles and inspired medieval chivalry. Martin Luther launched the Reformation in Erfurt, and Jakob Fugger, who closes our story, built his financial empire in Augsburg (16th century).

This class will include sights, artwork, and architecture, as well as music samples that will inspire discussion and ultimately paint the big picture of Germany’s history.

On the Road Through German History has been divided into two parts that can be taken consecutively or as stand-alone courses. During the winter term our travels will center on the country’s beginnings through the 16th century. The second part is a separate course offered in the spring which continues from 1600 and ends in present day Germany.

There will be an online reading packet that consists of short essays.
