For nearly four decades Louise Erdrich has populated her prize-winning novels with generations of Chippewa characters struggling to survive in a world hostile to native people, and struggling to adapt and preserve their traditions.

In this course we will read two pairs of books from two different periods in her brilliant literary career: Tracks (1988) and The Last Reports on the Miracles of No Horse (2001), and then The Round House (2013) and The Night Watchman (2020). The reading for this class will be demanding (an average of 180 pages a week), but these are books you won’t want to put down. Although we will be bound to the ZOOM format, my hope is to generate eight weeks of lively discussions.
