Working in Encaustic invites spontaneity and improvisation with tools and other materials. The painted layers harden almost immediately allowing artists to carve, scrape and etch into the surface unearthing the history of paint colors below. Collage and transferred images can be easily added to the surface. Paintings can be drawn on with various dry media. Stencils and pan pastels are a great way to add graphic interest, plus fusing and remelting can create amazing visual effects. Lastly, pigment sticks oil paint may be rubbed onto the textured surface to enhance even the tiniest details.
