Pottery: Basics and Beyond

Adult Class | Registration opens 5/11/2025 8:00 PM EDT

Join us for an introduction to the world of pottery! In this beginner-friendly class, you'll explore working on and off the pottery wheel. By the end of the session, you’ll have built a strong foundation in essential skills such as centering, trimming, and glazing. Whether you’re looking to create functional pottery or simply enjoy the therapeutic nature of working with clay, this class is perfect for those new to pottery. It will also serve as a ‘back to basics’ refresher class for experienced potters.

  • Tuition includes bench time for students enrolled in classes; it does not include workshops. Clay must be purchased in class ($32 or $35/bag); tool kits ($20 + tax) also available. Please bring cash or check. Lab and clay fees cover costs of firings and glaze materials.

Shawn Hansen

Shawn Hansen is an emerging ceramic artist and educator.
He hails from a small village in the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York (population 305).
In 2022 he received his Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art and Public Health from Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York. While attending Hartwick, he became interested in using clay as an advocacy tool for the unjust and outdated policy restricting gay men from donating blood in the United States.
From 2022-2023, he attended the University of Hartford in Connecticut as a post-baccalaureate student; at the same time, he started teaching introductory wheel-throwing classes.
Shawn was the artist-in-residence at Wesleyan Potters in Middletown, CT from 2023-2024. He continues working at Wesleyan as an instructor and studio technician. Shawn’s work explores the connections between society, food, and gathering through the lens of his imaginary friend Charlie Reckles.
