Beginning Oil Painting

Adult Class | Registration opens 8/6/2025 8:00 PM EDT

Whether you're picking up a brush for the first time or returning after a long break, this 10-week course is designed to give you a solid foundation in oil painting. We will move at a measured pace and according to a lesson plan which I will provide so you can see what is coming up each week. I plan on being very hands on during the class time. You will receive direction, encouragement and lots of feedback.

  • Materials for Beginning Oil Painting

Note: All materials can be ordered from Dickblick.com

Oil Paints You may get student grade oil paints if you are on a budget. They are fine for learning and you can upgrade later. Example would be Winton Oil from Windsor Newton. Student grade should run you around $40 for the paints listed below.

    Please bring:
    Alizarin Crimson
    Cad red hue
    French ultramarine blue
    Viridian Green
Cad Yellow light ( or Cad yellow pale hue which is less expensive)
    Burnt umber
    Titanium White

    Medium and thinner:
Refined Linseed oil (4.23 oz) $8.63
    Gamsol Odorless Thinner (8oz) $9 or (16.9 oz) $13.20

Vine Charcoal (start with “soft” hardness) Pkg of 12 for $9.17

Stretched canvas two 9x12 and two 8x10. (Make sure its stapled on the back, not the sides.)

I use freezer paper for my palette, which I tape to the table or to cardboard. If you prefer, you can purchase a pad of disposable palette paper. Grey is nice to work on.

Small jar in which to put your painting medium.
Another small jar for your thinner.

Rags/paper towels and some sort of old shirt to wear. (Oil paint is tough to get out of clothes)

Palette knife (I can show you mine in class before you order. You can get a package of these thru Amazon.

WE WILL DISCUSS BRUSHES IN THE FIRST CLASS SO WAIT TO PURCHASE!

In 1985 she started Zoë Design with an art school colleague and together created custom designs for a wide range of high end clients. One of the most recent projects was the creation of a mural for the James Blackstone Library in Branford, CT. Many of our projects required taking on other artists and,

by necessity, coaching them to help complete the murals. She has assisted in art projects in the elementary and middle schools.
