Drawing in Charcoal Workshop

Working in charcoal is one of the most classical of mediums: you can smooth transitions from soft, hazy effects to crisp, defined marks.It’s so forgiving: easy to layer, smudge, and erase, It’s ideal for practice and experimentation. Using it is expressive: it allows for energetic, emotional, and realistic results, from dramatic portraits to atmospheric landscapes. Charcoal’s versatilityvaids smooth transitions from soft, hazy effects that most ancient and elemental contrast — dark against light. This class has a required material list.

- various charcoals (willow, compressed sticks
- charcoal brick for thickness
- hb drawing pencils
- paper (newsprint or drawing paper)
- erasers (kneaded, vinyl)
- blending tools (stumps, chamois, brushes, paper towels)
- a workable fixative spray to prevent smudging
- w hite charcoal pencil is great for highlights.
