Start with a Mark: Discovering Creativity One Line at a Time

Start with a single mark and see where it leads. Through playful drawing exercises, explore line, rhythm, repetition, shape, and pattern while allowing each mark to respond to the one before it. Let go of expectations, follow your intuition, and discover how a simple line can become something unexpected. This class has a required materials list.
5-10 sheets of drawing pad paper
9" × 12" or larger
2–3 pencils (HB, 2B, or 4B)
Eraser
Pencil sharpener
Black markers or felt-tip pens
Colored markers
Colored pencils and/or crayons
Optional: fine-tip pens, brush markers, or other favorite drawing tools Optional: sketchbook for additional experimentation (after workshop) Note: Students are responsible for providing their own materials.
Please use what you already have on hand, there is no need to purchase specialty supplies.
