Suitable for beginner to experienced smiths that want to learn more about knife making. This course will introduce students to the methods and techniques involved in hand crafting an all metal friction folding knife. Students will learn to forge, grind, heat treat, and polish a carbon steel blade using coal or propane forges. We will also cover forging and shaping a copper handle for the knife, assembly, and sharpening. This course will use predominantly hand tools such as tongs, hammers, files, and sharpening stones. We will also have some use of power tools such as grinders for cutting and shaping parts of the blade and handle material. Note: the blade we will be forging in class is carbon steel and NOT damascus. Students will need safety glasses, leather work (fireplace) gloves, and should wear jeans, a non-flammable cotton shirt and/or jacket, and closed-toed boots or leather shoes. Our forge is an outdoor building that is only semi-enclosed; please dress accordingly. For full-day workshops, please bring a lunch to be on the safe side, as there may or may not be time to get food during a lunch break.

ROBERT BURNS has always been fascinated by metalwork and traditional crafts, particularly in how they connect to history. Robert began studying blacksmithing under James Hoffman at the age of thirteen, learning the American colonial style of blacksmithing. He then went on to learn the craft of bladesmithing, joining the American Bladesmith’s Society (ABS). Robert has worked full time out of his shop creating knives, woodworking tools, and historic reproductions for the past eight years and is based in Massachusetts.
